WayneSleepsHotShoeShowPosterTopIntroduction

Wayne Sleep is a British dancer, choreographer and actor, widely known for his performances as a principal dancer for the Royal Ballet, his many television appearances in the UK and several roles in feature films such as “The Virgin Soldiers” and “The First Great Train Robbery”.

In 1980 Wayne Sleep formed his own company ‘DASH’, which toured to great acclaim in the UK, Europe and the Far East. His own highly successful dance television series for the BBC “The Hot Shoe Show” won a BAFTA Award in 1983. Based on the success of the television series Sleep developed a dance performance which toured the theatres of eight UK cities as “Wayne Sleep’s Hot Shoe Show”, from September to November 1985. The show consisted of 22 dance acts and is described as ‘a unique blend of tap, jazz, rock and ballet, from comedy sketches to stunning showstoppers’.

The music of the dance acts included numbers by Elton John, Jerome Kern, Duke Ellington, Marvin Gaye, Randy Newman, Barry Goodman and... Vangelis. In fact Vangelis’ music was played during two acts of the show, the first titled “Missing” (suggesting the music is the theme from the film "Missing" (1982)), the second a specially commissioned dance piece for the show simply titled ‘Vangelis’. The dance was performed by Wayne Sleep himself, together with a one of his guest dancers Marion St. Claire, Marguerite Porter or Lesley Collier. One reviewer of the show wrote: ‘The music of Vangelis was a big plus. Two dances, Missing and Vangelis, were superb’.
